How to Create a Transparent Background in a Raster Image

Overview: This article demonstrates how to remove a background and make it transparent in a raster image, using the Channel palette.

Applies To: Canvas X, Canvas X Geo, Canvas X3, Canvas X Draw

Steps to Perform:

1. Go to Window > Palettes > Channels to open the Channels Palette.



2. Using a selection tool of your choice (Wand, Polygon Lasso, Marquette, etc.) select the part of the image you would like to make transparent.
*Note: You can adjust the tolerance of the selection tool in the Properties bar for a more precise selection.


3. Right click on the selection and choose "Select Inverse".


4. Within the Channels Palette, press the new selection button to create a new clipping mask.


5. Click and drag the new selection into the Mask Box


6. Press Esc to remove the selection. The selection within your image is now transparent.



 To export image:
7. Go to File > Save As... You must save as either a GIF or PNG to retain transparency. Make sure to Select "Render Whole Page" and click Save.


8. In the Render Image window, change the Mode to "Indexed Color" and check the "Mask" box. Click OK.


9. Click OK on the Indexed Color Window.


10.  In the Export Options select "Visibility Mask". Click OK. Your image is now saved!
