Drawing with the Vector Brush Tool

The Vector Brush tool allows you to draw vector curve paths. You can select the brush type, end type, angle, weight, width, and join. The Vector Brush tool can also be used with graphic tablets.

To Draw with the Vector Brush Tool:

  1. From the Path tools, select the Vector Brush tool from the Toolbox. 
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Select a stroke from the Preset list in the Properties bar. To access the Preset list, click the stroke on the right side of the Properties bar.
    • Set your desired stroke options in the Properties bar.
  3. Select a Pen ink in the Toolbox. Fill ink is always set to "Null".
  4. Configure the Vector Brush options, as described below.
  5. Click and drag to start drawing curves. You can continue to use the tool until you exit Edit mode.
  6. Do one of the following to exit Edit mode:
    • Click the Vector Brush icon on the left side of the Properties bar.
    • Press Esc.
    • Select the Selection tool in the Toolbox.
    • Double-click an empty area in the current document.

You can use the Direct Edit Selection tool to modify and fine-tune your path.

Vector Brush Options

  • Standard
  • Calligraphic

Standard pen strokes have a uniform weight, specified offset, and may have tapered ends.

Calligraphic pen strokes have a separate width, weight, and angle setting.

Weight

Set the thickness of the stroke.

Width

Enter a value in the Width field or drag the red arrow in the edit box. The Width refers to the thinnest part of the stroke. The Width should differ from the Weight.

Angle

Enter a value (in degrees) in the Angle field.

Endcap

Select a style for the ends of your stroke.

Join

Select Round or Bevel as the style for joining sharp edges at points.
